DEI 101: Taking Your First Steps Towards Creating a More Equitable School Culture
“Black Lives Matter.”“Anti-Racism.” “White Privilege.” These terms and phrases are increasingly a part of public conversation, and they are also increasingly a part of the work we do in schools.  How school leaders work with their students and staff around these issues will greatly impact the culture and climate of their school. For schools and school leaders at the beginning of this process, the path forward can seem daunting and overwhelming. The goal of this workshop is to help participants take these beginning steps, and develop a plan to successfully move their school in the right direction.

Having Difficult Conversations
As leaders we must learn to have difficult conversations. It is natural to shy away from having to deliver bad news, give negative feedback on a class observation, respond to a difficult parent, deal with a problematic situation, or give a person critical feedback. Communicating information that is emotionally charged is not easy but an integral part of our jobs. Avoiding difficult conversations or even worse mishandling them can have negative consequences. This workshop is designed to help you approach difficult conversations with confidence and manage them skillfully.

In this session we will discuss the learning journey that the Holliston Public Schools has undertaken to address our own bias as a community, the tools used to work on our curriculum, the training needed for staff to learn more about white privilege, and the experiences of students of color in our district. From a leadership perspective, we will review more theoretical models around reflection, including positioning theory and discourse modeling to further understand white privilege in school leadership, and how as a leader you can notice your own bias.

Hacking Hatred: Pandemic Iteration [ALL LEVELS - CC]
We're back. Same but different. Isn't that how we all feel right now? We are ready to vent and ready to Hack. How 'bout you? Are there things this past year you feel need to be discussed?
Hacking Hatred will get you thinking, but more than that, Brian McCann and Marty Geoghegan will spur you to action and discussion about educational ideas and the year that was 2020-2021 that need to be hacked.
Come on, we all need to Hack some Hatred together. Join us; this is Hatred you will LOVE.
Hacking Hatred is a presentation technique, Brian McCann and Marty Geoghegan have positively experimented with to help spread great ideas and tap into the extensive knowledge and experience of everyone in the room.
Participants will move between small groups to discuss ways they might have dealt with some sticky educational aspects/scenarios this past year, which we all dealt with in our schools at any level and any position today. We then share these experiences together, Brian and Marty will share their own advice on how we all might be able to Hack Hatred together.
In a year that we might have HATED, let's share the collective LOVE on what we did to change that HATE and move forward.

How Do You S.E.E. Your Staff? The Importance of Supporting, Engaging, and Empowering Teachers! [ALL LEVELS - CC]
This session will show leaders strategies to employ in their practice and at their school to support, engage, and empower teachers to actively engage in a community of learning.

Leaders will know and be able to:
  • Implement a consistent loop of support, engagement, and empowerment.
  • Automate tasks designed to increase communication and teacher empowerment.
  • Increase their ability to coach rather than evaluate.
  • Create and distribute effective communication of classroom instruction to the community at large.

The most important influence on student academic success is the classroom teacher and the ability of that teacher to increase both their own and the public's perception of the usefulness of the school experience. This session will show emerging leaders how to achieve this level of communication with their community through the empowerment of teachers.
Through demonstration and activities, this session will cover the Circle of Empowerment, Digital Tools for efficiency and to support reflection, techniques to empower and rejuvenate leaders and teachers as contributors to a positive culture, and it will conclude with an examination of the communication product they have created.

Healing Our Schools [PREK-8/SEL]
This year has been like no other. Opening schools in the fall will be a new challenge. We need practical strategies that will support the mental health of our whole school community as we begin to heal.

This session will provide participants with a basic overview of the impact of trauma on the brain and learning. Participants will be able to apply this knowledge to create an opening plan to support the SEL and mental health of staff and students in Fall 2021.

This session will include strategies from Responsive Classroom, RULER, Culturally Responsive Teaching & The Brain as well as other tools that principals can use to focus on SEL and the well-being of everyone in the school. We need to assure our school community is prepared to heal emotionally in order to make academic gains and be ready and present to learn.

Using ESSER funds to Drive Coherent Instruction for Teachers and Students [ALL LEVELS - CIA]
Covid has presented a range of challenges for schools and districts as they look ahead to the 2021-22 school year. Schools are bringing on new and novice teachers at greater numbers than ever before, and teachers are welcoming students back with varying degrees of learning and readiness. However, the good news is that the research is clear that the adoption of high quality instructional materials is one of the most cost-effective, long-term interventions that districts can implement relative to student outcomes. In this presentation, we will discuss how schools and districts can use ESSER funds to purchase and implement high quality instructional materials that provide important support to educators and students during this unique time.

DBT: STEPS-A as a Tier 1 Intervention at a Vocational Technical High School [SECONDARY- SEL]
This presentation will explore the the experience of the pilot year of Pathfinder RVTHS' implementation of DBT STEPS-A, an evidence-based curriculum using the theoretical underpinnings of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. The curriculum is designed to be used as a universal (Tier 1) intervention and was delivered to all 9th and 10th graders enrolled at our school. The curriculum addresses skill-building for students in the areas of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

The curriculum is meant to reduce: school discipline issues, drug and alcohol use, risky sexual behavior, bullying victimization and perpetration, school dropout rate, school placement to alternative school settings, self-harming behavior, and suicidal ideation. It is meant to improve school-wide academic performance via GPA, school graduation rate, school attendance rate, school climate, and emotion regulation and decision-making abilities. The presentation will explore baseline and outcome data as well as qualitative data from students and program facilitators. It will also delve into lessons learned in implementing a global SEL curriculum.

Kids Are Struggling...Now What? A Focus on Skill Regression, Differentiation, and Social Emotional Strategy Development [ALL LEVELS - CIA]
As educational leaders, it has always been easy to identify struggling learners, but with the global pandemic crashing down on our educational system, it now appears that EVERYONE is struggling and falling through the cracks. Regression, whether it is academic, social-emotional, or behaviorally based, is a normal part of childhood. However now more than ever, regression feels as if it is at a much larger scale and leaves us wondering how will we ever address it.

Through this workshop, we will guide you through our Student Assistance Team Intervention model. This model focuses on accurately identifying struggling learners using a team-based approach, and provides teachers with easy-to-implement interventions/strategies for any classroom. Our model has been created with the help of Ms. Jessica Minihan, to be skill-based and data-driven. Our goal is to provide you with all of the templates, protocols, and structures to get you jump started, and allow your school to celebrate student successes, in both a pandemic and post-pandemic world.

e-hallpass & FlexTime Manager - Navigating the COVID World with Two #1 Solutions [SECONDARY - SEL]
Two areas that schools are now very interested in: 1) how can schools provide a contactless hall pass system? 2) how can schools provide students more remediation/enrichment/SEL time? E-hallpass is a contactless digital hall pass system modernizing a 100-year-old system of paper sign-outs. All staff can now know who’s in the hall at all times. Passes can be limited by a location’s maximum capacity, by a building-wide or student-specific activity limit. Even meet-ups can be prevented and much more. The need for e-hallpass is greater than ever!

FlexTime Manager takes the headache out of scheduling remediation, enrichment, SEL, Genius, etc activities while providing students with Voice and Choice. Now you can run all these activities simultaneously for all students with ease (including taking attendance and integrating it with your SIS).
Learn why 1,500+ schools in all 50 states are using these two solutions.

Leading through Storytelling [ALL LEVELS - CC]
Who doesn’t like a good story? And as educators, we revel in the high points, missteps and forward journeys of our peers.

Inspired by the work of Brianna Hodges, an MSAA favorite speaker, one principal used storytelling to build a fractured community during the pandemic, while another administrator searched to find the stories behind Commonwealth school leaders across the state.

Join MSAA President Kathleen Duff and NASSP’s 2018 Digital Principal of the Year Brian McCann for a fast-moving, highly entertaining hour of how personal storytelling can strengthen your leadership through relationship-building and vulnerability modeling.

Experience our WHY, learn the basics of HOW, and begin to find the strength and courage to share your journey as a frame to your current mission.

Laughter is guaranteed. Inspiration is our goal.

Who knows? This session might be part of YOUR story as you start next year.

A Tale of Disruptive Leadership: The "No Apology" Pandemic Tour 2021 [ALL LEVELS - CC]
Being a connected educator changed my life as a leader. I canceled final exams, changed school culture with an 11 x 17 piece of paper, created a school improvement plan based on faculty innovations, and starred in a viral snow day video.

You can, too. Even in a pandemic.

I make no apologies for the passion I bring to school every day. I want to share some no-cost innovations that have changed my school, positively influenced my community, and help me earn the title of national Digital Principal of the Year.

This pandemic has only ramped up innovation among educators. Although my energy may inspire you, I hope you take away some small part of my journey, and, after a period of reflection, iterate it to be your own beginning of something new.

Adults yearn for passionate renewal. Hope for positive change--and seeing it in action--is much harder to locate than statistics to back up a claim. The need to collaborate with current practitioners has never been more important for education leaders than TODAY.

Let's connect now--in disconcerting times--through storytelling, without apology.

Staying Positive: Systems and Strategies for a Pro-Social School [PREK-8 - CIA]
The way our students present themselves in schools has changed. In the recent years, schools are encountering more students with traumatic backgrounds and troublesome actions then ever before. As a school system we have to adapt to meet the needs of these students, and the way to do that is to stop lamenting on students' "behaviors" and start focusing on building a pro-social mindset within the school community.

Ron Sanborn (building principal) and Kara Nowak (assistant principal) will walk participants through how to think differently about "behavior" kids and how to build a pro-social climate within their schools that builds students up and constantly recognizes the achievements and success students have every day.

This presentation will include:
  • The importance of a building based pro-social team
  • Different ways to recognize student academic achievements
  • Different ways to recognize student character achievements
  • Ways to make classroom teachers the key part of the mind shift
  • Incorporating parents and families in the celebration of student success
  • Outside organizations to bring into your building

We plan to share our buildings journey and the success and obstacles we have faced in working toward the goal of becoming more pro-socially centered and aware as a building.

From Old to Bold: Rethinking the Model of School Leadership [SECONDARY - CC]
The work to lead our schools to meet the ever-changing needs of our students and our society is challenging, time-consuming, and honestly, sometimes just exhausting.

As leaders of our schools, we often spend time dividing the responsibilities of the work between principals and assistant principals. While this seems logical, what if we told you that it was more effective as leaders to share every aspect of your work? What if as leaders we saw our roles not as a 50/50 split but as a 100/100 commitment? What if we changed our thinking to develop a model of collaborative leadership that made our work more sustainable and exciting?

Join Nipmuc Regional High School Co-Principals John Clements and Mary Anne Moran as they share collaborative leadership strategies that they have developed during the past 11 years as co-leaders of their school. Now in their fourth year as co-principals, John and Mary Anne are believers that shared leadership is sustainable leadership. When you have a partner in the leadership, the challenging work becomes more manageable, the instructional leadership is strengthened, and the growth within the school community is exponential.

This workshop will:
  • Give insight into the collaborative routines, mindsets, and practices that make school and professional growth sustainable.
  • Provide simple strategies to increase efficiency, enjoyment, and excitement in your work.
  • Provide practical steps other school leaders and their teams can put into practice to turn isolation into collaboration and ideas into action.

How Covid-19 Helped Transform a School, Build a Community, and Redefine Family Engagement [PREK-8 - CC]
On March 11th, 2020-a third-grade student whose father worked at the now-infamous Biogen conference arrived at Potter Road Elementary School. That morning began us on a course that altered the entire rest of the school year. We were one of the first schools in Massachusetts to shut down as a result of Covid and were set on an uncharted course.

We immediately began to work as a staff to see the opportunity in this change. The interactive presentation takes a look back at the year that was and explores all of the lessons learned as a result of the changes we were all forced to make.

This presentation, given at the 2020 Leading Equity "Creating a New Normal" summit takes a look at the lessons learned from emergency remote learning. Specifically, we'll take an interactive look at how the unprecedented Covid closure taught leaders lessons in how to truly connect with their school community-all stakeholders--teachers, students, and parents.

We'll focus on the next steps and work collaboratively to figure out how to best chart an effective course for the future to create a positive/collaborative climate and culture for our entire school community.
